PTA News - November 17, 2022

Members Present: 21

Principal Report: Corey Hafey

  • Canned Food Drive – Ends December 14th

    • Through Burton Orthodontics

    • Appleton is typically in the top 3 donating schools

    • The top schools usually win a monetary prize. So keep the donations coming in!

Spell-A-Thon: Hilary Soria

  • Celebration:

    • Last year 140 100% Spellers

    • This Year 172 100% Spellers – WOO HOO!!!

  • Tomorrow we will celebrate these spellers!

  • Every kiddo in the building will get a Spell-A-Thon pencil

  • We have LOTS of prizes still to come as the donations come in

  • Thanksgiving Break is a great time to collect your pledges

Angelo’s Ornament Night:

  • It was HUGE Success!

    • Next year, we may need to have parents schedule a time-slot because it was so busy this year!

  • Next Year’s Date: December 5th

Financial Report: Brooke Bray

  • Some online Spell-A-Thon donations are already coming in

  • We had a bill from the district for the upcoming PA System

  • Approx. $38,000 in the bank right now – In a good place!

  • Question: Should we add a line-item to the budget for maintenance and upkeep for the new PA System?

    • Jared – Probably not necessary!

PA Equipment for the South Gym: Jared

  • The new system is ordered and should be

delivered on Monday

  • Total Price: $8,736

  • $3,500 will come from the music department

  • About $1,500 to pay the district for wiring

  • A few other incidental expenses as we install, but it shouldn’t be much

  • Idea: Have a fun dance party for the kids to realize the fruits of their labors and help them understand that their hard work paid for this cool new part of their school.

  • Volunteer Opportunities/Requests:

    • We need volunteers to solder the new cables for this system. Please step up to help with this project! Get with Jared to help!

    • We would like to have a pool of people that know how to operate the new system that can rotate helping out for concerts, special events, etc.

      • April – Let's get this out on the Facebook page

Playground/Shade Structures: Jared

  • We started talking about this last year. We want to bring it back up now – A BIG goal for our fundraising!

  • When you have a specific goal, you typically raise more money

  • Joy Z. - She was looking at something around $60,000 - $100,000, so it would be a big push!

  • Jared – We might be able to push to do both shade structures and new playground equipment

  • If you know of businesses that might want to help with this project (donations, etc.), reach out to Jared Johnson.

Tree Replacement at Appleton:

  • We have quite a few trees that have died over the past few years and we would like to replace them. We would also like to get a few more to plant around the school.

  • Marina Lancheros – The 5th grade Legacy Project might want to help with this

Restaurant Nights: Krisi/Mary

  • Pablo’s Pizza – December 15th

  • Freddy’s - No update yet from this night

Other Ideas & Thoughts:

  • Joe K.– He was at the ornament Night and he remembers the PTA conversation about the cost of this type of night – It’s not really a fundraiser, just a fun family night! Would we be open to having a company “sponsor” events like this?

    • Parents could also “Sponsor” this type of night, or a certain number of additional children

    • Hilary – We have families that don’t come to these nights because they can’t afford it

    • We have a few family events that are not money-makers, but a great way to involve lots of families

    • Lots of members liked this idea. Joe, Corey, and Todd talked more about it – Way to go Joe!!

  • Corey – We had an Appleton family donate Thanksgiving meals to other families in need. Amazing Generosity!!

    • We can always use more gift card donations for our Appleton Families that need support over the breaks. Grocery Store gift cards can be delivered to the Appleton Office and will be given to families in need.

  • Joy Zeller – Business Partnerships just started at Redlands Middle School, and they set their membership donations at $250, $500, and $1,000. We may want to rethink our donation amounts – Ours are $100, $200, and $500 right now.

    • Something to think about!

    • We can promote these businesses at our various events throughout the school year.

Upcoming Dates to Remember:

  • Thursday, December 1st – Spell-A-Thon donations due

  • Thursday, December 8th - 5th Grade Music Program

  • Thursday, December 15th – Next PTA Meeting

Corey – This is a great time to think about how thankful we are. We have a great school, great families, great staff, great kids – There is no other place like Appleton!
