Appleton PTA News

Members Present: 13
Principal’s Report: Corey Hafey
Spell-A-Thon:
We are always amazed at the success of this fundraiser.
Thanks to Kim Morelli, former Appleton teacher, for bringing the Spell-a-Thon to Appleton!
Potential use for Spell-A-Thon Money:
Aquos boards in Special Education room (2 boards?), library, computer lab, & maybe three more (Reading intervention, Math intervention, CLD)
Some of these may have to be “mobile” units so they are movable. These are a bit more expensive than the “fixed” boards.
We will come back in January with updated prices for seven more boards. Our district gets a discount, so that will be built in.
Over the summer PTA put 18 boards in our classrooms – teachers and students are loving them!
Purchasing more math intervention materials for our special education program.
Around $1,100 for materials directly connected to our Bridges Math Curriculum
Jared – What are these materials?
Lots of answers – Dice, board games, spinners, manipulatives, etc.
Jared – Motion to approve $1,100 for the purchase of math manipulatives
April – 2nd
ALL in favor; No opposed
Passed to spend $1,100 to purchase Math Intervention Materials
Purchasing additional decodable books for our young readers to support small reading groups and students in interventions
We don’t have a price for this at this time. Still doing some research.
McComb – Should we wait until the new adoption is done to see what we actually need?
Corey – There is such a need for these material at this time. It might be good to get some now and then re-evaluate again after getting the new materials next year.
Auction Parking Space: Corey/April
At the Carnival, the Paring Space auction spot became a bidding war. In the end, two different people paid over $600 for the premium spots.
One of these families is a big supporter of Appleton – The Beebe Family. He came to Corey and talked about how important Appleton is to him and to his family. He wants to keep the sign to display in his garage. Not long after that conversation, Corey found out that Mr. Beebe has a health issue that is very serious.
Do we give him the sign at the end of the year? YES!!!!
So, for next year, do we have one spot? Or two?
April – Idea: Still auction one spot, and then talk to the top two bidders as see if they would be willing to both buy a spot.
Sheila: When we have two identical items, it typically doesn’t have as a good result – Bids just get split between the two items.
Jared: Another thought – The second spot could be a prize for something.
Winner of the Corn Hole Tournament
Buy a raffle ticket for a chance to “win” the spot.
We still have time to think about this!
Financial Report: Brooke Bray via. April F.
Corey talked about Spell-A-Thon -- $41,731 fundraiser this year!
Sound System - $10,660
We will get reimbursed for a large part of this! Jill Phillips has two grants that will be around $9,000. Way to go Jill!
April – Opened a savings account for Smart Board replacement. It has $5,000 in it to start with.
Corey – We are setting up a fund to be prepared to replace our boards when they need to be replaced. We will put $2,500 per year into this account.
Current Account: Around $60,000
Corey – The biggest expense is Instructional Aides that work directly with Appleton students. A BIG Thank You to our PTA for supporting this expense!
Restaurant Nights: Krisi/Mary
Freddy’s - $420 this time!
It was a Music Program Night, so that might have helped!
Smokin’ Oak – Dec. 20th & 21st
Sheila – Last year, staff members could order theirs and a PTA Member was a “runner” and picked up for us – Mary Coleman
December 21st – April will pick up orders for teachers
Krisi will reach out to Mary Coleman about how she did this last year and they will try and do it again. This would be next Wednesday!
Other Ideas & Thoughts:
Marina Lancheros – Barb Williams leads our MTSS Team and has two or more meetings per week. She puts in a great amount of time as the leader of this committee. Can we honor her time for this position with a stipend? It is so important to our entire school!!
Corey – There is no MTSS Facilitator in the world that is better than Barb! She has a lot of work for this position!
Teachers all work so hard, but Barb spends so much time in this position! She uses her Planning Time to lead our MTSS Team.
April – How can we pay for that? Would it be a line-item in the budget?
Corey – Yes, that is what it would have to be.
April – Could it just be a lump-sum and we give her that?
Barb -- “I am sweating right now! I appreciate that. At one-point Corey tried to get a Stipend through the district, but that didn’t happen.”
Corey – I know that’s hard to put a number on. Some Title I Schools may have this position paid with a stipend. He will do some research on this and come back to the group.
Art Night – March 3rd
Corey – If Jason, the ComicCon artist, wants to come back, should we move him up to the South Gym? He needed more room!
Kelli G. can reach out to him about this
Sing-Along – Corey has been asked about why parents/families can’t attend this year. * This is just for students to sing some songs. It is not a student performance. There really isn’t room for parents and families to join us.
Santa & his Elf will be coming to Appleton. He will be here for the Sing-Along and visiting primary classrooms.
Jared – If the library gets an Aquos Board, would it replace the TV?
We haven’t thought that far ahead yet!
Canned Food Drive: Appleton collected almost $10,000 cans!
